MPD and Social Media

Helping Missionaries Use Social Media to Enhance their Ministry Partner Development.

7. Connect with Referrals

Get and Connect with Referrals through Email and Facebook

Connecting with someone in person to ask them to connect you with others is even more important than to ask them to join your team financially. Asking for referrals through digital media usually only works with people you are very close to and who are digitally savvy. Even then, try to connect over video or the phone.

However, when you come to the point of asking people to connect you with others, you can ask them to use email and facebook the same way you are using it. First, to help them namestorm people that might be interested in hearing about your ministry. Second, in connecting you with their friends in the normal way they communicate with them.

NAMESTORMING

When asking for referrals, you can suggest they check their facebook page for ideas of people to connect with you. Also encourage them to look at their email address books. When getting names of people, be sure to ask for their email and phone number.

EMAIL OR FACEBOOK MESSAGE FROM PARTNER

After namestorming, ask your ministry partners to either send  an email or facebook message to their friends and copy you or add you. Or offer that to email their friends if they are not able to do it in a short time frame. Make it easy for them by having a message with links they can copy and paste on your online presence or email/facebook them a sample message.

Encourage them to send it to one person at a time for maximum effectiveness, but also add the caveat that in the end, it is better for the message to get sent to a group than not get send at all. Make sure that you respond to each person individually in the end.

SAMPLES YOU CAN USE

Here are some sample emails and/or Facebook messages.

Hello, I hope you are doing well! I wanted to introduce you to my friend, (your name). I partner with him/her/them in giving students and faculty the chance to say yes to Jesus for the first time and a lifetime.I believe that you will enjoy hearing the positive impact of his/her/their ministry, and I would love for you to consider partnering with him/her/them as well.

Like many mission organizations, Cru staff members have the responsibility to develop a team of financial partners who provide the necessary finances for their outreach, including their salary and business-related expenses.  Currently, (your name) is developing this team of people.

Here is a video from her describing her ministry. Would you take just a few minutes to watch it? You can also find out more on his/her/their website www.staciessite.com.

(Your name) will be following up with you shortly, so be looking for a message from her. If you have any questions, please get in touch! Thanks for considering this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Your Partner

If it is someone I am trying to meet with in person, then I follow up by responding to both of them with this email:

Hi! Thanks so much for introducing me (partner).  (Their name), I am really honored that (partner) would introduce us and look forward to connecting with you.

I would love to get together and tell you about my ministry and the different ways you might partner with me. Would you be free to meet on (Day, time) or would (Day, time) work better? I can meet you wherever is convenient for you. If it is helpful to you, check out my website. (link to your website)

Thanks so much for considering this!

If it is someone I am going to try to meet with over the phone or skype, then I send this email.

Hi! Thanks so much for introducing me (partner).  (Their name), I am really honored that (partner) would introduce us and look forward to connecting with you.

I would love to schedule a 20 minute phone appointment to tell you more about my ministry and for an opportunity to get to know you just a bit. Is there any way you would have time for that this coming week?

Here is a quick 3 minute video that gives an overview of my ministry and my website has lots of information as well as a full presentation about my ministry if you want a more thorough introduction.

I look forward to connecting with you!

EMAIL MESSAGE FROM YOU

If your ministry partner gave you emails but you will be the one emailing them, here is an example of an email you can use.

Dear name,

Hi! My name is (Your name). I am a friend of (FRIEND) from (WHERE YOU KNOW THEM). I work with Cru and as I shared about my ministry with (FRIEND), she/he thought you might be interested in hearing about what I do and the different ways you might partner with me. I count it such a privilege that she/he would give me the opportunity to get to know you. She/he  is such a delightful person, so I know that any friend of hers/his is someone I would like to meet! Let me tell you just a little bit about myself.

My hope is to give people the same opportunity that I was given my freshman year of college- to begin an intimate, thriving relationship with Jesus Christ. Following this passion, I joined the staff of Cru in 2001. Why Cru? College students on the university campuses around the world are the most strategic resource to reach the world for Christ. Only 1% of the world’s population goes to college, however that one percent makes up the leaders of our nation and our world. These students are searching for answers and direction. Our challenge is to show them how the Gospel is relevant to their lives. Then we seek to help them grow in their relationship with God, transform their campus and send them to the world.
